From 2005 to 2009, Mahila Janachetana Kendra (MJK) served as a foundational partner for the global “We Can” Campaign in Nepal. Supported by Oxfam GB, this transformative initiative aimed to end all forms of violence against women (VAW) by fostering “Change Makers”—individuals committed to challenging discriminatory social practices and promoting gender equality within their own homes and communities.
During this period, domestic violence was often hidden behind closed doors. MJK recognized that legal change alone was insufficient without a fundamental shift in community mindsets:
The Change Maker Movement: Identifying and empowering individuals who lead by example to create a society free from violence.
Geographic Leadership: MJK was selected to host the historic Mechi-Mahakali Yatra in 2009, launching the national march from the Mechi Bridge at Nepal’s eastern border.
Inclusive Dialogue: Moving beyond women-only groups to include husbands, students, and judicial stakeholders in the conversation about gender justice.
Mass Social Mobilization: Organizing high-visibility events like the Mechi-Mahakali Yatra to unite the nation against VAW, inaugurated by the Chief Justice of Jhapa District.
Interpersonal Transformation: Conducting “Talk Programs” between husbands and wives to address domestic violence and promote equitable household dynamics.
Creative Advocacy: Utilizing Forum Theater, Radio Programs, and door-to-door awareness campaigns to reach the most remote corners of the Jhapa District.
Institutional Engagement: Partnering with schools, local institutions, and stakeholders to embed the principles of the “We Can” campaign into the community fabric.
