The Institutional Development and Sustainability Program is a strategic initiative by Mahila Janachetana Kendra (MJK) aimed at enhancing the organization’s internal governance, financial management, and operational efficiency. Supported by Tewa Nepal with a grant of NPR 500,000 for the fiscal year 2080/81, this project focuses on transitioning the organization toward a more self-reliant and sustainable model of development.

This grant is specifically designed to empower MJK as a grassroots women’s organization, providing the necessary resources to stabilize its infrastructure and improve its service delivery to the women and marginalized communities of Jhapa. By investing in institutional growth, MJK ensures that its advocacy for gender equality and human rights remains consistent and effective for years to come.

The Context

In the landscape of non-profit work in Nepal, many women-led organizations face challenges in maintaining long-term sustainability due to a lack of core institutional funding. MJK identified several areas for growth:

  • Strategic Resilience: The need for professional development and updated organizational policies to navigate changing social and political environments.

  • Financial Independence: Reducing dependency on project-based funding by exploring sustainable resource mobilization strategies.

  • Local Compliance: Strengthening the relationship and official coordination with local government bodies (Municipalities and Rural Municipalities).

  • Self-Reliance: Aligning with Tewa’s vision of inspiring Nepali women’s organizations to move toward sustainable development and institutional autonomy.

Project Objectives

  • Capacity Building: To upgrade the technical and managerial skills of staff and board members to ensure high-quality program implementation.

  • Governance Strengthening: To refine organizational bylaws, administrative procedures, and transparency protocols.

  • Sustainability Planning: To develop and implement a long-term resource mobilization plan that promotes financial independence.

  • Local Coordination: To formalize partnerships with local government authorities through mandatory approval and reporting processes.

  • Movement Building: To actively participate in Tewa’s nationwide mission of empowering women’s organizations and contributing to the national movement for women’s rights.
