The “Strengthening Feminist Movement” project is a core initiative of Mahila Janachetana Kendra (MJK) aimed at building the capacity and collective power of women-led grassroots groups. Supported by Women’s Fund Asia (WFA), this project focuses on advancing the rights of women, girls, and non-binary individuals by providing them with the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to challenge patriarchal structures.

Through specialized training, advocacy, and networking, the project empowers local activists to address critical issues such as reproductive rights, economic inequality, and gender-based violence. MJK acts as a bridge, connecting marginalized voices from the Jhapa district to the broader regional feminist movement, ensuring that social change is led by those most affected by injustice.

The Context

In many parts of the Koshi Province, women’s leadership at the grassroots level remains hindered by systemic barriers and a lack of formal organizational support. MJK identified specific needs within the local activist community:

  • Capacity Gaps: Local women-led groups often lack the technical resources to scale their advocacy or sustain long-term social movements.

  • Underrepresented Voices: The need to bring the specific struggles of rural and marginalized women in Jhapa into the national and regional feminist discourse.

  • Structural Barriers: Deep-rooted social norms continue to restrict the participation of women and girls in decision-making processes.

Project Objectives

  • Movement Building: To strengthen the organizational and leadership capacities of grassroots women’s groups and feminist activists.

  • Rights Advocacy: To increase awareness and local-level advocacy for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and bodily autonomy.

  • Collective Action: To create safe spaces for women and marginalized groups to strategize, share experiences, and build solidarity.

  • Policy Influence: To mobilize feminist leaders to engage with local government bodies and influence gender-responsive policy-making.

  • Institutional Growth: To enhance MJK’s internal capacity as a feminist organization to better support the evolving needs of the movement.
